"Are we safer?" A report card on the war on terror.

We have more than six years of experience with the Bush administration's war on terror, and there has not been another terrorist attack on U.S. soil. But can the administration take credit for that? Below is a link to a report card on what the administration's counter-terrorism strategy has achieved, and what it has cost. The figures are drawn from official government sources, reliable news accounts, institutional reports and our own continuing review of data.

Florida School Turns Down Students Wanting To Form Peace Group

Students at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High School are waging a war on peace.Recently, sophomore Skylar Stains decided to hold Peace Shirt Thursdays at the school. Skylar and her friend, Lauren Lorraine, started wearing peace shirts and soon recruited more friends to wear them. Now, the “Peace Shirt Coalition” as they call themselves, has close to 30 students from all grades.
Students started approaching the group members, yelling obscene things at them, said Lauren.
Lori Masterson, assistant principal at Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High, said by law, the administration cannot discuss specific discipline dispositions for students but that the school works with teachers and coaches to make sure all students on campus are safe and treated fairly. “As of this writing, to my knowledge, no one has submitted a written proposal with an identified sponsor for a peace club,” Masterson said in an e-mailed statement.
But peace group members said they have submitted a written proposal and had a written sponsor, but they were recently turned down. Read on… via Crooks & Liars

A Sneak Peek Review of Seal's System

The record opens with "If It's in My Mind, It's on My Face." Taking on a pop dance arrangement, Seal holds true to his statement. "If It's in My Mind, It's on My Face" is about finding love. At first listen it's easy to think Seal and his subject are running away to another place, but by the end of the song the lyrics suggest more. Seal is attempting to "save" his love interest from whatever is wrong in their life. "If I could fly and I spread my wings/ In time to free you of these foolish things/ And we won't be back for sure/ If it's in my mind, it's on my face/ Wish I could take you to a better place," he sings. Al Gore's low voltage network

As the television writers' strike slowly gnaws its way through the TV grid, the question arises: What else is there to watch? Doesn't Al Gore have some kind of television channel, among his many worthy pursuits? Maybe nobody there's on strike.

Al Gore's channel is called Current, carried in the Northeast by Comcast and others, and no, their staffers are not on strike. That is because Current is a "user-generated" television channel that broadcasts myriad brief segments, called "pods." Current calls itself the "TV network made by the people who watch it." No stranger to orotund claims, Gore says Current allows viewers to "reclaim American democracy by talking about the choices we have to make." BOSTON GLOBE

Evidence of dramatic effects of global warming apparent now

Packed ice along the Arctic Ocean and Bering Strait has retreated hundreds of miles and decreased in thickness more than 40 percent in the past 50 years. Native American villages are crumbling into the sea, and the biological heart of the Arctic that is home to populations of polar bears, caribou, migratory birds and other wildlife are caught in this dangerous recipe for disaster. Millions of acres of forests have died because of insect outbreaks caused by a warming climate, and are now burning. These troubling effects, when paired with the threat of further habitat destruction by oil and gas drilling, mean Alaska's wild places are doubly imperiled. Press & Sun Bulletin

Ex-Saudi Official Says His Govt. Could Have Helped Prevent 9/11

Yes, the Saudis certainly could have helped prevent 9/11. They could have done so years earlier by not teaching a radical, vicious strain of anti-Western Islam in their schools and mosques. Then maybe the 15 (out of 19 total) 9/11 hijackers who hailed from Saudi Arabia and were weaned on the stuff wouldn't have ended up as America-hating, jihadist mass murderers. America Could Have Killed Usama bin Laden in August — But Didn't

America Could Have Killed Usama bin Laden — But Didn't FOX News
We know, with a 70 percent level of certainty — which is huge in the world of intelligence — that in August of 2007, bin Laden was in a convoy headed south from Tora Bora. We had his butt, on camera, on satellite. We were listening to his conversations. We had the world’s best hunters/killers — Seal Team 6 — nearby. We had the world class Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) coordinating with the CIA and other agencies. We had unmanned drones overhead with missiles on their wings; we had the best Air Force on the planet, begging to drop one on the terrorist. We had him in our sights; we had done it.

MARGARET CHO'S "THE SENSUOUS WOMAN" Opens In NYC

Margaret is back in Cho business with a new burlesque revue at NYC's Zipper Theater which is both twisted and hilarious. Margaret is always a hoot, and she doesn't disappoint in her latest venture which has more emphasis on strip-tease than politics. But girlfriend has the audience in the palm of her had as soon as she opens with her stand-up routine. I really don't care for traditional stand-up, but Margaret's style is different--less cheesy punchlines and more like hanging out with a really cool girlfriend who is more observant and funny than your other friends. via LADY BUNNY
