Milwaukee Pastor Blames California Wildfires on Tolerance of Gays

DailyKos published an email yesterday from anti-abortion pastor Matt Trewhella that was sent out to his supporters. Trewhella is a Milwaukee-based wingnut of the Falwell school of thinking, apparently. According to DailyKos, "Matt Trewhella is known by law enforcement, and was investigated by the FBI in the mid 90's during the murders of abortion doctors and clinic workers." Trewhella blames the California fires on the state's new education law which bans school instruction or activities which could be perceived as negative towards gay, bisexual, or transgender people. via TOWLEROAD

Scientists Closer To Steering Hurricanes (But There’s a Caveat)

Remember back in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans? Immediately afterward we were all told by those in the know that because of global warming this was going to become the norm and that raging, Katrina-like storms would be routinely ravaging the United States and other hurricane prone areas like never before.

Never mind that what had once been a Category 5 hurricane was only Category 3 when it made landfall. And never mind all the special conditions peculiar to the city of New Orleans which contributed to the destruction, such as nearly half the city’s land being below sea level and the failure of badly designed and sometimes substandardly constructed levees. A report by the American Society of Civil Engineers earlier this year said that two thirds of the flooding could have been avoided if the levees had held. Continued... Blogger News Network

But this one would break even more records. As it crossed very warm waters on the 18th, Wilma intensified at an incredible pace; from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane within 24 hours. The next morning, Hurricane Hunters flew into Wilma, finding the smallest eye they'd ever seen; less than two-and-a-half miles wide, clear evidence of an extremely powerful hurricane. CBS4 Miami

New York Police Department detectives have released composite drawings of two unknown white male suspects wanted in the assault last night on Air America talkshow host Randi Rhodes. The suspects are described as both being in their 50s, one tall, the other shorter and markedly obese. Rhodes' lawyer told the Daily News she was injured in a fall while walking her dog. He said she's not sure what happened, and only knows that she fell down and is in a lot of pain. The lawyer said Rhodes expects to be back on the air Thursday. He stressed there is no indication she was targeted or that she was the victim of a "hate crime."

Air America Radio host Randi Rhodes was mugged near her Manhattan apartment Sunday night, losing several teeth in a brutal attack that has knocked her off the air while she recuperates, fellow host Jon Elliott announced on his show early Tuesday morning.
"It is with sadness that tonight I inform you that my Air America colleague Randi Rhodes was assaulted last night while walking her dog near her New York City home," Elliott told his listeners this morning on Air America.
The attack took place near the corner of 39th Street and Park Avenue, Elliot said.
Because Rhodes was wearing a jogging suit and had neither a purse nor jewelry, Elliott speculated that "this does not appear to me to be a standard grab the money and run mugging."
"Is this an attempt by the right wing hate machine to silence one of our own?" he asked on the air. "Are we threatening them? Are they afraid that we're winning? Are they trying to silence intimidate us?"
Rhodes has been with Air America Radio since it launched in 2004, becoming a mainstay of the national liberal radio network. Her show airs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern weekdays. Lionel filled in for her show Monday afternoon, but no announcement was made of the reason.
An Air America representative confirmed Tuesday morning that Rhodes was mugged. Calls have been made to Rhodes and the New York City police department's press office, and as more details become available they'll be reported here.
